Churros with Hot Chocolate Sauce

Deep-fried dough covered in cinnamon sugar, then dipped in hot chocolate sauce.  Sound good?  It is!  This certainly isn’t the healthiest dish – and should only be enjoyed as an occasional treat – but it’s fun to make, delicious and will definitely hit that chocolate craving on the head!

FOR THE CHURROS
  1. 200 g plain flour
  2. 1/2 tsp salt
  3. 3/4 tsp bakin powder
  4. 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
  5. 35 g vegan margarine
  6. 300 ml boiling water
FOR FRYING
  1. 1 litre vegetable/sunflower oil
  2. a few chunks of bread
FOR THE CINNAMON SUGAR
  1. 75 g caster sugar
  2. 2 tsp cinnamon
FOR THE HOT CHOCOLATE SAUCE
  1. 1 tbsp vegan margarine
  2. 100 ml soya/rice cream
  3. 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  4. 2-3 tbsp sugar
  5. 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
FOR THE SAUCE
  1. Melt the margarine in a non-stick pan, on a low heat. Stir in the soya/rice milk, followed by the sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla essence. Set aside on a low heat, stirring occasionally, whilst you cook the churros.
FOR THE CHURROS
  1. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, add the margarine and vanilla essence and stir in the boiling water. When the margarine has melted, combine the ingredients together and beat until the mixture is lump-free.
  2. Fill a pan with around 1 litre of vegetable oil and heat on full. Use a few chunks of bread to test if it is hot enough to fry the churros. The bread should turn brown in under a minute.
  3. Using a piping bag, fitted with a star nozzle, pipe about 3-5 churros (depending how wide your pan is) and fry until they start to go golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and dry off with some kitchen paper.
  4. Cook the rest of the churros dough in batches and sprinkle on the cinnamon sugar.
  5. Enjoy with the hot chocolate dipping sauce or on their own.
Notes
  1. Although these taste best freshly cooked and hot, the churros and sauce will keep in the fridge for a couple of days. The sauce thickens and tastes just as great when it's cold, but you can always reheat it in a non-stick pan.
